reformers and radicals essays

reformers and radicals essays Question: What means did reformers and radicals use to communicate their messages and how did these means influence their ideologies? Over the first Century and a half of American History, Reformers and Radicals found many innovative and effective ways to communicate their ideas to the country. Today, sending a message across the country can be as easy as writing an e-mail, and mass communication can be achieved as easily as setting up a website or buying a television advertisement. It is hard for one to imagine a world without a computer, a TV, or even a telephone, but this was the world that made the task of delivering a message to the people such a daunting task in 19th Century America. Reformers and Radicals used methods such as public speech, writings, organizations, and even violence to communicate to the entire nation. Indeed, the method of conveying a particular message or ideology chosen was very important, as it would often play a large part in shaping that ideology in the eyes of the public. Public speech was one of the most common methods that reformers used to reach the general public. Speeches had many advantages that made them a very appealing way for reformers to convey their message. The main advantage that they held was that they were cost efficient. It only takes one person to make a speech, and there is no other capital required. If someone wanted his or her view heard and had no other way to go about it, a speech was often the best option. Speakers did not even require venues to make their speeches. Although churches or other public buildings were often used, a speech could be made from the back of a horse driven cart. This style of riding from town to town was often seen in New England and upstate New York, where towns were close enough to make traveling from town to town practical. Speeches also appealed to reform groups who did not have a large contingency; a small group of speakers could ofte...

The marketing concept and marketing communications Essay

The marketing concept and marketing communications - Essay Example 2002). Thinking of marketing less as a function and more as a set of values and processes (Moorman and Rust 1999) appears as the new vision of marketing. The survival and growth of a company therefore requires accurate knowledge about customers and careful relationship management. In this paper I look for the underlying principles of the new trends in marketing. In doing so, I focus first on exploring the new concept of marketing; then I show an example of new trends in marketing in AstraZeneca (See Appendix). After that, I tackle the concept of marketing communication with the case of Royal Caribbean Cruises (See Appendix). Finally I refer to conclusions. During the last few decades marketing has been challenged to undertake a paradigm shift away from the view of marketing as an optimization problem with an emphasis on product, price, promotion and distribution and toward a conceptualization of marketing as a set of activities focused on intra-firm and inter-organizational influence processes. As a result marketing has moved away from a focus on transactions as the fundamental unit of analysis and toward a focus on relationships with customers and suppliers (Webster et al. 2003). In addition, in this relationship the customer is no longer just a recipient of goods. The customer is viewed as a co-producer of service and therefore marketing is defined as a process of doing things in interaction with the customer (Vargo and Lusch 2004). Understanding relationship in marketing (RM) requires distinguishing between the discrete transaction, which has a distinct beginning, short duration, and sharp ending by performance, and relational exchange, which traces to previous agreements and is longer in duration, reflecting an ongoing process (Morgan and Hunt 1994). Numerous definitions of RM have been introduced in the literature since the beginning of 1990s reflecting the high attention of

Kautilya Also Known As Chanakya

Kautilya Also Known As Chanakya 1. Kautilya, also known as Chanakya or Vishnugupta was the key advisor to and the genius behind the strategy undertaken by the king Chandra Gupta Maurya (317-293 B.C.) who stopped the advance of Alexander the Greats successors and introduced the Golden Age of India.  [2]  The Mauryan kingdom united and amalgamated the Indian sub-continent into a single entity for the first time, thus creating Indian nationhood. The Mauryan Empire extended from the Persian border in the West to Burma in the East covered most of peninsular India. The empire lasted 150 years until about 180 BC, after which the empire dissociated into several fragments. Kautilya was the chancellor to Chandra Gupta Maurya and he composed the Arthashastra to counsel a ruler on how to defeat ones enemies and rule for the general good. The Arthashastra was very influential in ancient India up to the 12th century AD, when it faded from the public eye. The text, however, reappeared in 1904 and was published in English in 1 915.  [3]   2. He was a great thinker who could write a definitive treatise on economics and government at a time when large parts of the world was steeped in intellectual darkness. All sources of Indian tradition Brahmanical , Buddist and jain-agree that Kautilya (also refer to as Vishnugupta in a stanza included at the end of the work) destroyed the Nanda dynasty and installed Chandra Gupta Maurya in the throne of Magadha. The name Kautilya denotes that he is of the Kutila gotra ; Chanakya shows him to be the son of Chanaka and Vishnugupta was his personal name. While it is known that Kautilaya destroyed the Nanda dynasty and installed Chandragupta Maurya on the throne of Magadh. Not much is known about his early life except that he had a score to settle with the Nanda king and he had vowed to destroy the Nanda dynasty. He found Chandragupta and took him to Taxila and gave him an education fit for a future king. Together, Kautilya and Chandragupta set about attacking the Nanda kingdom. The rev olt misfired and Chandragupta and Kautilya fled the scene to save themselves and during this escapade Chandragupta and Kautilya was hiding himself in an old womans dwelling. He overheard her rebuking her child saying you are just like Chandragupta! Because he had got his fingers burnt by starting to eat from centre of hot dish. The Duo learnt their lessons and changed their tactics and began conquest from frontiers and finally Chandragupta was installed as the King of Magadh  [4]  . Kautilya then retired from active life and reflected on all that he had learnt during the process of overthrowing Dhana-Nanda. Since he found the earlier works on statecraft unsatisfactory in many respects, he composed his own definitive work presenting his ideas concerning the ways in which a ruler should gain power and maintain his authority. He was way ahead of his times in his thinking and covered every conceivable aspect on the art of politics and warfare, which could be imagined at the time he lived. For Kautilya, military strategy was an integral part of the science of polity and he made no distinction between military techniques and statecraft. How to form alliances, how to organise and administer them, how to attack a powerful king, how to deal with revolts in rear, what tricks to play on gullible people- there is plenty of evidence in the text to indicate that the author was giving real life answers to every conceivable hypothetical situation. 3. Army has been regarded from the beginning as one of the necessary instruments for the maintenance of a state. Kings, not only in India but throughout the ancient world, maintained well organised and well prepared armies both for the defence and expansion of their kingdoms. History is full of instances that whenever any ruler or state neglected the maintenance of their armies, failures in the form of loss of sovereignty or territory have occurred. Arthashastra is the science, which is the means of the acquisition and protection of Earth. Arthashastra could be regarded as the study of the general well being on earth. And since the state can make this well being possible, the protection of Earth and its acquisition which are an essential part of state activity are declared to be province of this shastra. Kautilyas Arthashastra does not take any religious aspect into account. It deals with the various subjects directly and with accuracy. The Arthashastra contains 5363 Sutras, 15 books , 150 chapters, and 180 Sections. The 15 Books contained in the Arthashastra can be classified in the following manner: (a) Book 1 deals with Fundamentals of Management. (b) Book 2 deals with Economics. (c) Books 3, 4 and 5 describe Law. (d) Books 6, 7, 8 talks about Foreign Policies. (e) Books 9 to 14 look into the subject of War. (f) The 15th book describe the methodology used in writing the Arthashastra. 4. The topic of war is the last subject in the Arthashastra since War is always the last option. However if a war is unavoidable, preparation and maintenance of the army and the correct warfare strategies are essential in the defence of a country. Warfighting has changed over the centuries due to the impact of changing technology and other factors. Kautilya contributed immensely to the development of the same, his ways of arranging battle groups in war and their administration during peace keeping all relevant factors in consideration still merits study by the modern armies. Kautilya in his Arthashastra states that war is a method to achieve wealth and stability. He emphasised the need to understand all the constraints which emerge in warfighting. Kautilya has argued that the main constraint that a state faces is the economic constraint and many a wars have been lost for want of resources. The Arthashastra has advised the king to eliminate the constraints, mainly the economic constra ints in the furtherance of sates interests. The use of economic strength as a means of states power has also been stated by Kautilya. JUSTIFICATION OF THE STUDY 5. Kautilya in ARTHASHASTRA has dealt with various existing subjects which formed the basis of Chandragupta Mauryas rule and victories. In fact there is a view that Kautilyas Arthashastra deals only with matters of foreign policy and economy. A great portion of this book does in fact, deals at length with military matters. He consolidated the existing strategies and tactics of those times and gave his opinion on the subjects, which led to victories of Chandragupta Maurya , who never lost a campaign. It thus emerges that the excellence of Kautilya was not only in diplomacy but also in warfare, but the important fact is that he was able to illustrate methods to organise and manage the armed forces in a large empire. The concepts of military administration and organisation in war and peace were examined and spread out in all the adhikaranas, thus leading for topic of research for integrating and analysing those important aspects of organisation and administration which formed the basis of administering and organising large armies as of Mauryan empire, and at the same time analyse its relevance for modern armies. 6. Armed conflict has many aspects attached to it and it is not only attack and capture .The constraints are what the commander in the battlefield has to deal and find the solution of each of the constraints. The constraints are tangible constraints and also intangible constraints which have to be solved to progress the war and finally achieve victory. The tangible constraints can be the economic requirements for war effort and the logistics support required for the armed forces and the intangibles are morale, leadership and the training of the troops. The intangible constraints vary from motivation, trg and cohesiveness which are a result of the org and administration of the army. 7. Kautilya deals with the complexity of the modern warfare with the constraints faced during war being similar to older times. The problems that existed then, persist in a more widespread and magnified manner in the present day warfare. The principles of Constraint resolution spoken by Kautilya are also relevant in the contemporary world. Study of Kautilyas war strategy will provide knowledge of warfare in ancient India and would also explain the important aspects of the constraints to warfare in the modern world. Methodology Statement of Problem 8. The concepts of military administration and organisation in war and peace were covered and spread out in all the adhikaranas of Arthashastra. Analysis of these aspects of organisation and administration which formed the basis of administering and organising large armies as of Mauryan empire is obviously important. However applicability of these concepts needs to be studied and analysed due to the changed spectrum of modern day warfare and its relevance for 21st century armies. 9. Hence there is a need to study the warfare aspects propogated by Kautilya with reference to Management of warfare and analyse its relevance for modern armies. Hypothesis 10. Warfare Management aspects propogated by Kautilya with specific reference to organization, administration and economics of warfare are relevant for modern armies. Scope 11. The paper will attempt to assess the link between economic power of the state and the military power and how one is derived from the other. The methods of resolution of the economic constraints during Kautilyas time and the modern times will also be discussed. The study aims to focus on aspects, which are still relevant for the better management of modern armies. Organization of the Dissertation 12. To understand the dimensions of the privacy debate, it is valuable to remember that e-commerce allows marketers to advertise goods and services ever more accurately, in an increasingly personalized manner. Rather than relying on demographic statistics that lump consumers into broad target groups, or collating credit card purchasing data into marketing profiles, the Internet allows businesses to track profiles and information provided directly by the consumer — and then create automated marketing programs tailored specifically to that customer. By monitoring clicks made on the Web and leaving behind "cookies" on the computer to help the system remember an individual, marketers can gather a startling amount of personal information with which to sell goods and services. There is a lot of talk about the desired level of privacy regarding the wide range of customer data held by businesses. The consumers are becoming more displeased by marketers buying and selling their personal information, while at the same time the rise of e-commerce has raised fears about this issue, due to the ease with which all types of sensitive data may be gathered, copied, shared, and misused via the Internet. In response, the European governments have passed tough laws regulating how businesses manage and share personal information — including a prohibition on sharing data with businesses located in countries that fail to provide adequate data protection. Given the far less restrictive policies on privacy in the US, many in the business community feared that the new laws would effect e-commerce between the US and Europe. 2. Melting pot vs salad bowl Essay

Have you ever heard that America is a melting pot or a salad bowl? The metaphor for the melting pot is unfortunate and misleading for America. A more accurate metaphor would be a salad bowl, for the salad bowl can be very different from the melting pot because of all its ingredients can make it distinguished from the melting pot. Even today Americans are calling America a salad bowl instead of a melting pot. Whereas it once was a melting pot but soon changed. There have been many questions and many answers for the melting pot and the salad bowl form America and its different citizens. These metaphors can’t be better than the others; they both serve the same purpose just in a different ways. In my opinion today American is not a melting pot; America was once called a melting pot but now is a salad bowl. First of all America is a salad bowl because people today are able to practice their own culture. On the other hand the melting pot doesn’t allow this because all the cultures blend in to from one culture. The salad bowl allows people to retain their original cultures and traditions whereas the melting pot doesn’t. Despite these benefits, some people believe that America is a melting pot instead of the salad bowl. The melting pot states that we should surrender our culture and ethic identities. Whereas the salad bowl lets you be free to choose what you want to practice. The way I see it is that the salad bowl doesn’t make us blend in or surrender our cultures. The salad bowl has many different features that the melting does not have.

legal brief essays

legal brief essays A twelve-year-old boy, Lionel Tate, brutally beat a six-year-old girl to death in South Florida in 1999. Tate was pretending to be a pro wrestler while he pummeled this girl to death, her liver even had split in half. A Florida law was recently passed which made it easier for prosecutors to try kids as adults. Tadfggc dfcvbbgds vgdf cvbbte was unfortunately one of those kids. He was sentenced to life in prison at the age of 14. Now everyone is regretting the decision once they seen the poor kid crying because his whole life is gone and there is nothing he can do about it. The problem that lies here is whether or not Tate really deserves to be sentenced to death at such a young age. No one that young has ever been sentenced to life in prison before. And Florida and California are the only states that have laws this harsh, but many other states were considering on following the same way as Florida and California. This is a legal issue because it is a question of whether This law is unconstitutional or it is perfectly acceptable. The pros to this case is that maybe it will stop other states from following in the footsteps of Florida and California. And maybe even this will get rid of the law in those states. The Cons of course are very bad. A 14 year olds life has just been thrown away and will mostly likely spend the rest of his life behind bars. There was some information missing in this article such as details about the court case itself. It kind of just says that the decision was life in jail and thats it. Hopefully the decision the Florida Court made will open up peoples eyes. They will realize that these laws need to be more specified or thrown away. These two states werent thinking when they made these laws and didnt think about any of the consequences at all. They were rushed to quickly and now they need to be atleast changed. ...

Sleeping disorders essays

Sleeping disorders essays Over the past several weeks I have researched sleeping disorders. I have taken a special interest in learning about the less talked about sleeping disorders. These sleeping disorders are referred to as parasomnias. This category consists of rapid eye movement behavior disorder (RBD), nocturnal sleep-related eating disorder: (NSRED), sleep walking, and nocturnal seizures. I will talk about how to help cure them, what causes them to occur, and give other helpful information I have found on the generalization of sleeping disorders. Rapid eye movement (RBD) has been commonly known as sleep terrors. Basically what happens is when a person with RBD sleeps they have a tendency to act out dramatic and or violent dreams. This disorder can cause a person to yell, punch, kick, and scream in the night. Mark Mahowald a medical physician in Minnesota, explains a little bit about this disorder (2003) They tend to be brief episodes because if they fall out of bed or injury themselves the people are immediately awake (p.3). After they are awoken they are alert and can remember a vague dream that correlates to the actions they preformed. Studies have shown that most victims of RBD are males 50 or older. They have also proven a definite connection between RBD and Parkinsons disease. They are not yet sure of what causes RBD, but they did give a few suggestions on ways to help eliminate the disorder. For example taking anti-anxiety medications like klonopin. About 90% of those who use this medication are helped dras tically. Another sleeping disorder that is rare but evident is nocturnal sleep-related eating disorder (NSRED). This unfortunate disorder causes one to physically get up and eat in undesirable fashions. It can be very dangerous for the person; they could cut themselves, choke, eating foods you may be allergic to, and blood sugar is untamable and people are not sleeping adequately. When eating in the n...

Coaching process Literature review Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Coaching process - Literature review Example However, natural skill or talent will not be enough for an individual to optimally perform in any sport. With so much at stake in sports events including country’s honour, professional life of the sportspersons, fan expectations, etc, etc, individual or the individuals (team) involved in any sport need specialized tuning up or if aptly said coaching to elevate their skill to the expected levels of the competition. So, sports teams are using the services of experienced, equipped and talented individuals or experts to coach their under-skilled or underperforming members as well as further tuning the performing players. This role of coach will discussed as part of the literature review, with focus also on different coaching styles for different situations and the differentiation that exists within sports coaching. The term â€Å"coaching† is used when one individual teaches or trains another individual or group of individuals in certain aspects, in which they are failing short, by contributing physically, mentally, technically and also emotionally. The international coaching accrediting body the International Coach Federation (ICF) defines coaching as, â€Å" an ongoing partnership that helps [people] produce fulfilling results in their personal and professional lives and†¦deepen their learning, improve their performance, and enhance their quality of life†. So, coaching is mainly given as part of acquiring the lacking aspects, as demonstrated from its origins in sport. That is, term coaching came into popular parlance, when sports teams all over the world had a â€Å"head person†, who observed how the players in the team played the game and corrected any weaker aspects. â€Å"By late 1800, in the US, most college sports team employed coaches as well as managers and by the 20th Century, non-sporting coaches were emerging, those who were not specifically experts in the skills of their clients but who

Football Club Management Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3500 words

Football Club Management - Assignment Example The ManU's strategy of survival and its core policies though not necessarily its strategy for growth has been explained in its club charter which is a document which is publicly available and gives out various core aspects such as, consultation processes, ticketing, membership benefits, community activities, merchandising, standards of staff conduct and complaints procedure. (http://www.manutd.com). The ManU has a social orientation which is designed to contribute to the social culture and sporting life, a common bond which is created by the community of football clubs in Britain. (Morrow : 2003). The business potential of ManU lies in its strong brand awareness which is increasingly attracting multinationals as Nike which has taken over the uniform-replica merchandising business run by the Club internally earlier. The other partners include, Vodafone, PepsiCo and Anheuser Busch. (Maidment:2004). The marketing mix of ManU lies in the plethora of sporting and sports related business activities such as an outstanding football team, merchandising, television rights, marketing of sports venue at Old Trafford, sale of products, promotional activities and branding as a premium product. (http://www.thetimes100.co.uk). ManU thus has retained the top position for eighth year in a row in the English league with an income of 259 million. The lead position achieved by the Club in earning large quantum of revenues has been a result of an increasing proclivity to tap markets beyond Britain. (http://www.deloitte.com) Growth has to be both organic and inorganic, in a globalised world the potential for growth lies in the international markets which can be achieved by a planned strategy based on an innate understanding of the culture and structure of the organization in line with the environmental realities. ManU has the potential for unstinted growth and has to determine its strategy for the same in a cogent manner. Strategy Review - ManU "Strategy is the direction and scope of an organisation over the long-term: which achieves advantage for the organisation through its configuration of resources within a challenging environment, to meet the needs of markets and to fulfil stakeholder expectations". (Johnson : 2001). Strategy has been viewed with varied connotations by management pedagogues. The Mintzberg model for instance has classified the main forms of strategies into planned, entrepreneurial, ideological, umbrella, process, connected, consensus and imposed. As is implied in the strategies named thus, it would be evident that thus far ManU has not been following a "planned" strategy for growth, its strong football team and supporter population more than making up for any divergent business requirements and profits were being generated through its brand image. It had perhaps a one point agenda that of winning each and every encounter in the English league and club matches in Europe. This it had been consistently do ing with a strong line up of football stars led by David Beckham till very recently. Diversification
